I · Nature, Opoka & History

Where the Julian Alps shelter the hills 15 kilometres from the Adriatic Sea.

Goriška Brda descends from the ridges of Korada and Sabotin toward the Friulian plain. Protected from cold northern winds by the Julian Alps and caressed by warm Adriatic breezes, our hillsides gather 2,900 hours of sunshine each year.

Eocene Flysch (Opoka) & Assilina medanica

Fifty million years ago, these hills lay beneath a warm Eocene sea. Alternating layers of marl (opoka) and sandstone preserve marine fossils—most famously the spiral foraminifer Assilina medanica, named after Medana itself.

From AD 610 & the Jesuit Jordanum to the 1787 Classificazione

First recorded as Villa de Mandan in 610, Medana flourished under the Patriarchs of Aquileia and Counts of Gorizia. In 1787, Europe’s first vineyard cadastre placed Medana in Class I.

Grandmother’s Brda Recipes & The Open Hearth (Ognjišče)

At Ošterija Klinec, hospitality is inseparable from the homestead. Almost everything that reaches your plate grows in our garden from early spring to late autumn or comes from our own pigs, goats, and poultry.

Sunlit Vineyard Terrace & Winter Fireplace

Dine outdoors on the panoramic terrace overlooking the terraced hills of Medana, or gather indoors beside the crackling Brda fireplace (kamin) when the Bora wind sweeps down from the mountains.

Live Embers, Čripnja & House Curing Room

We cook over live wood embers on the open hearth (ognjišče) and beneath traditional cast-iron bells (čripnja), dressing dishes with our own cold-pressed olive oil and homemade wine vinegars.
